TWITTER PHENOMENON, THE BIGGEST COMPETITION FOR FACEBOOK

Twitter is a free social networking and micro blogging services that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets.

Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website,Short Message Service ( SMS ) or external applications. The service is free to use over the Internet or mobile phone.

Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained extensive notability and popularity worldwide. It is often described as the "SMS of Internet," in that the site provides the functionality (via its application programming interfaces) for other desktop and web-based applications to send and receive short text messages, often obscuring the Twitter service itself.

Up until now, Twitter has attracted millions and millions of people all over the globe, thanks for it’s easy and quick user interface. Twitter doesn't just let you post your message, but also let you attach link of your websites, blog, interesting articles or online photo and images which can be accesed by everyone just by one simple click. Taking a quick trip to Bali ? take a picture, 'tweet' it..and BAM, within seconds. All your friends are full of envy seeing your smiley tanned face and tropical pina colada melting in your hand.

Eventhough, some people are still highly skeptical about Twitter because they think you can always post 'What Are You Doing ?' by using Facebook status message. But what makes Twitter is also popular because it's so popular among the Stars. A lot of Hollywood celebrities were joining so people including fans join and started following others. People love to "Know what the celebrities are up to, and with Twitter, you get to see what celebrities are doing(stalker-ish) without them accepting a friend request. For example, We have recently followed conversation between Heidy Montag and Spencer Pratt of The Hills about their sick puppy and Oprah Winfrey and Hugh Jackman talking about having dinner together this thurday night before going to Chicago. FUN !

And not just celebrities, but politicians, comedian, Sports-star, TV Host, Fashion Designers, even famous entertainment ( and non-entertainment ) websites and organization have joined Twitter to reach more audience and as a way to advertise themselves ( And of course..viral marketing ). Namely CNN, Larry King , Perez Hilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Gore , Shaquille O'neal and even www.telegraph.co.uk in one of their article reported that the US president, Barack Obama were so addicted to Twitter during his campaign era, the White House nearly took away his Blackberry.
