BOOK OF THE WEEK - THE GUM THIEF
The first and only story of love and looming apocalypse set in the aisles of an office supply superstore. Meet Roger, a divorced, middle-aged “aisles associate” at Staples, condemned to restocking reams of 20-lb. bond paper for the rest of his life. And Roger’s co-worker Bethany, in her early twenties and at the end of her Goth phase, who is looking at fifty more years of sorting the red pens from the blue in aisle 6. These two retail workers then strike up an extraordinary epistolary relationship. Through a complex layering of narratives, The Gum Thief reveals the comedy, loneliness, and strange comforts of contemporary life.
Douglas Coupland is Canadian, born on a Canadian Air Force base near Baden-Baden, Germany, on December 30, 1961. In 1965 his family moved to Vancouver, Canada, where he continues to live and work. Coupland has studied art and design in Vancouver, Canada, Milan, Italy and Sapporo, Japan.
His first novel, Generation X, was published in March of 1991. Since then he has published ten novels and several non-fiction books in 35 languages and most countries on earth. He has written and performed for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, England, and in 2001 resumed his practice as a visual artist, with exhibitions in spaces in North America, Europe and Asia. 2006 marks the premiere of the feature film Everything’s Gone Green, his first story written specifically for the screen and not adapted from any previous work. In 2007 Coupland’s novel, jPod, was adapted into a series of thirteen one-hour episodes with Canada’s CBC.
His next novel, Generation A, will be published in the UK, Canada and US in fall of 2009.

WALLPAPER* - THE MUST HAVE CUTTING EDGE INTERIOR/DESIGN/FASHION & ENTERTAINMENT MAGAZINE
***
This month, Wallpaper* is publishing a special June issue, Made in China, for which the magazine temporarily moved its office to Beijing and Shanghai.
The two pop-up offices – both immaculately designed work spaces – were manned for a month by a 15-strong team of Wallpaper's London staff, as well as the magazine's resident Asia correspondents. In addition, the magazine had on hand a special advisory panel of creative trailblazers who are remaking modern China.
Commenting on the issue, editor-in-chief Tony Chambers says: “Our China special has literally been Made in China. We produced the content there, looking out from the country, not just looking in. It was an adventure that very few magazines would be able to embark on, and the result is a truer, deeper take on the forces driving China forward. It's an issue our readers will devour.”
Wallpaper's Made in China issue highlights the design trends emerging from the country and puts the spotlight on its leading creative talent. It explores the best of China's fashion, architecture, and design, and includes a directory of the hottest new Chinese architectural practices. There is also a first peek at the most dramatic structures that will change China's landscape.
Fashion coverage includes a remarkable portfolio by leading Chinese art photographer Li Wei, using performers from the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony, plus a striking portrait of the country's top models. In addition, the magazine picks out some extraordinary and beautiful Chinese cigarette packaging, creates the perfect oriental style interior, and highlights some of the coolest pads in China.
You can find the latest edition Wallpaper* at Aksara Bookstore, 4th Floor Pacific Place Mall Jakarta.

BOOK OF THE WEEK - SNUFF
The Latest Book by Chuck Palahniuk, Author of the Contemporary Cult Classic 'Fight Club' :
*THIS IS NOT PORN
Chuck Palahniuk made a name for himself writing pitch-black social satires (Fight Club, Survivor) and has, in recent years, expanded into the realm of horror (Haunted, Lullaby). Hopefully somebody gonna make a movie out of this, how often would you see a non-porn Hollywood film telling story about a porn queen having sex with 600 men non-stop. This will be quite a challenge for any possible female cast..Scarlet, Keira, Angelina? Any comment ? ( except for the fact that they might need more than A DOZEN of female stunts.)

MUSIC OF THE WEEK - CARLA BRUNI, COMME SI DE RIEN N'ETAIT
Carla Bruni, a Former Model, Talented Singer, Songwriter & The First Lady of French.

In 1997, Bruni quit the world of fashion to devote herself to music. Now as the first lady of France, after marrying French President Nicolas Sarkozy in February 2008, Carla Bruni is one of the most photographed women of the world but she doesn't want this to affect people's perception of her or her music. She wants the music to speak for itself and here it does.

BOOK OF THE WEEK - SPUTNIK SWEETHEART
'SPUTNIK SWEETHEART - HARUKI MURAKAMI - Award Winning Japanese Contemporary Writer
″ Why do people have to be this lonely? What’s the point of it all? Millions of people in this world, all of them yearning, looking to others to satisfy them, yet isolating themselves. Why? Was the earth put here just to nourish human loneliness? " - Sputnik Sweetheart
Twenty two year old, Sumire is madly in love for the first time with an older woman, Miu, a married wine importer who lost the capacity for love when she went through a traumatic experience as a student. Surprised that she might, after all, be a lesbian, Sumire spends hours on the phone talking to her best friend, 'K' about the big questions in life:
"what is sexual desire and should she ever tell Miu how she feels about her?"
K, a primary school teacher, is used to answering questions, but what he most wants to say to Sumire is "I love you." But he knows Sumire only considers him as a close friend, nothing more. To get his mind off Sumire, 'K' consoles himself by having an affair with the mother of one of his pupils. At the same time, Sumire sets aside her passion in writing to work as Miu's personal assistant, and the two head off to Europe on a business trip. Sumire mysteriously disappears, and Miu summons K to help search for her.
Sputnik Sweetheart is the first novel in which Murakami explores lesbianism in depth. In this novel the characters all live in their own world and each is lost in this space like the satellite of the title, Sputnik. The novel explores unrequited love-triangle, sexuality and the fragility of friendships and acquaintances. This wonderful simply written book is another masterpiece by Haruki Murakami, who critically acclaimed for his previous international best sellers The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (1997) and Norwegian Wood (2003). In this book, Murakami again displays the minimalist craftsmanship that has made him a critic's darling both in Asia and the West. Perhaps better than any contemporary writer, he captures and lays bare the raw human emotion of longing. Definitely must read for you who like to dwell beneath the surface of human emotion.

MUSIC OF THE WEEK : NIGHT FALLS OVER KORTEDALA - JENS LEKMAN

NIGHT FALLS OVER KORTEDALA -
Jens Lekman, The comical music genius
Lekman mixes and matches sounds and genres like the world's most adept DJ, coming up with practically his own style in the process. Gracefully blends the acoustic with the electric, the real with the fake. Lyrically Lekman sticks mostly to love, finding it, losing it, sacrificing for it. The subject matter includes Lekman's first kiss—supposedly at age 19 ("And I Remember Every Kiss")—and being introduced as the boyfriend of his lesbian friend to fool her parents ("A Postcard to Nina"). Nights Falls Over Kortedala is surely will have you walking in the clouds before the first song is half over and have you filled with happiness for days afterward.
